Exploring the UK’s Most Challenging Trail

For many, a long-distance hike across some of the UK’s most rugged terrain is a once-in-a-lifetime challenge. But for nine-year-old Layla, it’s the next step in her growing list of outdoor adventures. This spring, Layla is setting off on an incredible 268-mile trek along the Pennine Way, one of Britain’s most challenging and scenic long-distance trails.

Spanning from Derbyshire to the Scottish Borders, the Pennine Way is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, steep ascents, and unpredictable weather. While it typically takes seasoned hikers around three weeks to complete, Layla aims to finish her journey in just 15 days. This ambitious trek is not just a personal challenge—it’s also a mission to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), supporting children facing serious illnesses.

From Playground to Peaks

Layla’s passion for adventure began early. With family ties to the Peak District, she’s been exploring the outdoors since she could walk. Incredibly, she has already conquered the National Three Peaks Challenge, climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon in just 24 hours.

Now, she’s ready to take on the rolling hills, open moorlands, and deep valleys of the Pennine Way, experiencing the full beauty and challenge of the UK’s great outdoors.

“I love proving that kids can take on big challenges too,” Layla says. “I know this hike is going to be tough, but I’m excited to explore new places every day.”

Preparing for the Journey

Training for such an immense trek is no small feat. Layla has been steadily building her stamina through hiking, triathlon training, and even long-distance walks to visit friends.

“One of my best training sessions was a 3.5-hour walk to a playdate,” she laughs. “It rained the whole time, but I didn’t mind—it was great practice!”

Her essential gear includes a map, plenty of snacks, a journal to document her journey, and an audiobook of Lord of the Rings to keep her entertained. But her most cherished item? A soft, squishy avocado toy that she carries everywhere.

Highlights of the Pennine Way

Layla’s journey will take her through some of the UK’s most breathtaking landscapes, including:

  • Kinder Scout – The highest peak in the Peak District, offering panoramic views of the moorlands.
  • Malham Cove – A stunning limestone formation made famous by the Harry Potter films.
  • Hadrian’s Wall – A UNESCO World Heritage site marking the historic Roman frontier.
  • The Cheviots – Rolling hills that form a natural border between England and Scotland.

But the most challenging part? The final 28-mile stretch to Kirk Yetholm, which she’ll begin in the early hours of the morning to reach the finish line on time.

Layla’s journey is about more than just adventure; it’s about making a difference. She chose to support Great Ormond Street Hospital after learning about the children who spend months in hospital, missing out on the simple joys of childhood.

“I hope that by taking on this challenge, I can raise money to support their amazing work and make a difference,” she says.

So far, Layla has raised over £1,700, and she’s confident she’ll hit her fundraising goal by the time she completes her trek.

Inspiring Future Explorers

Layla hopes her adventure will inspire other young people to step outside, challenge themselves, and embrace the spirit of adventure.

“My message is simple: Don’t overthink it—just go for it! If you believe in yourself and take that first step, you can do amazing things.”
